Hi, my first post here, im currently coming to an end of my 3rd year at uni doing architecture, im trying to finish of a model I have been making in Max. Im not really too hot on max but can do bits and pieces.

Part of my model features 7 structures, very similar to construction cranes, I modelled this with just lots of boxes and cyclinders and copying each section several times and then finally grouping them all together. The final model of this really starts to slow down max when it is duplicated 7 times, also when I try and render with a skylight and shadows turned on I get a message something along the lines of, advanced raytracer shadows ran out of memory.

I have tried using the cranes file as an xref into a file with the rest of the model but this does not seem to really help either.

The below picture is the only one I had on me at work but shows the cranes to the right, could anybody take a look at them and tell me if there is a way to make them one shape that wouldn't use up so many resources or something? Looking at some of the work on here im sure what I have done cant really be maxing out the program. What am I doing wrong?

My computer is dual core, 4gb ram so I dont think thats the problem.

Many Thanks for any help.

I don't think the cranes are the problem, there's some very dense mesh at the top of the screen that would use a lot of system resources. Also, how did you do the grass? Is it a bitmap on a plane or is it a series of billboards?

Sorry I should have explained, the grass and trees are all photoshopped in, I didn't have an image of just the cranes on me whilst at work.

The mesh at the top is just a series of planes which I used soft selection to drag parts down, then a wire material applied to them. The comp seems fine with those parts, just the cranes giving problems.

I have a file with just the cranes in and that is very slow to work in.

Thanks for the reply

How many polys per crane?

The cranes do look a little high poly, when you consider all the steps on your staircases and stuff.

Are those torus's too? In the bracing?

Just off the top of my head, I wonder if you could get away with just boxes with a material and opacity map?
I don't know if that's considered an acceptable practice but it would cut the poly count way down.

If you have 4 gigs or more you should get a hold of xp64. Its really the only way to use it properly. I heard of some guys using weird hacks to make it work in 32, but I dont know how to do them.

ok,
- go Right Click my computer Icon
- Go to Property and then go to advance.
-Under Performance Click on Settings.
-In the performance settings menu go to advance.
- And look for Virtual Memory and click "Change".
-On the virtual Memory menu . click on the "C"Drive (main hard drive)
it indicates the Memory you have / and the amount of memory its set up. (number
varies)
- go to custom size- maximum.
-Now change that number to the maximum. In my case "4092"
-Finally click OK, and OK and done.

I notice better performance with 3ds max, and other apps . Good luck

Yeah I know that trick, I dont think that has any bearing on how much of your ram xp uses as it only controls the page file (which is slower than RAM anyway).
