Just a question about applying materials to static meshes in unrealed 3. I have figured out quite alot about the material editor in Unrealed and I'm very impressed. In some ways its better than max's editor (non linear and powerfull!!). I was wondering though if its possible to assign materials based on material ids that you assign in max?. like for instance If I created a lamp that was unwrapped then created a nice normal mapped material with specular etc for the main object. then I wanted to apply a seperate material to the globe that glows or something by assigning it to a seperate material id within the mesh.
or do I have to create a mask to achieve that effect all in the one material?

Okay try this

1) Using Multi/SubObject for each ID you want.. you MUST at least have an image mapped in the diffuse slot in Max for it to export properly to UT3E (Can be any texture, just it must have something there!!)
2) Export to .ASE

In UT3E
3) Create a material for each ID you want in UT3E
4) Open the mesh properties (double clicking it) and under LODInfo open up the Elements drop down!
5) There you will see all the Material IDs you exported from Max, drop those down and link in your texture grin.gif

Hope this works... it should grin.gif

I'll add that if you simply apply ONE material ball to ONE mesh selection and a second to another, Unrealed will give you two separate material slots for the SM.

Thanks dude, that sounds like what I was looking for. I will try this at work tomorrow. sadly at home my very old but still expensive quadro card cannot run anything with pixel shaders. argghh. I'm gonna swap it out for my work machine's card sometime when no ones looking, or maybe buy a new games card. incidently whats the recommended card these days (ie:best cheap but good one) we must be up to 9000 series geforce cards right? (sorry i bought an x-box 360 and havent been keeping up with pc cards lately)

No probs... hope that helps!! smile.gif

In terms of cards, I am also pretty much out of the loop.
My work machine is a Quadro 4600 and it keeps Crysis and so on happy. But we're definitely up at the 9000 series.
Current pixel shader model is v5..

Thanks for the recommendation. I think I can afford that one too smile.gif

That material id thing works too. but it is annoying that you have to actually load a bitmap into each material in max so it shows up as multiple ids in unread ed. Still I'm glad it supports multiple ids and multiple mapping channels. now I just have to think of something to build. I can't decide on a theme. fantasy with mushrooms rocks and stuff like that. grimy interior like fallout?, the possibilities are overwhelming.

Hey hey! Glad it worked for you. Yeah its a weird bug that I think is actually in the .ase format... but can't be sure!!
Yeah, I know the feeling hey! My Windmill is planned to eventually end up in the UT3 Engine. There are just so many options, but at the same time I try to avoid the common stuff like Zbrush Monsters or Guns, eergh the game industry is filled with that stuff!!!
Post some WIPS when you get going, would be cool to compare works!!

EDIT: Some seriously inspirational work here for ya!!
