This is only my attempt to save at least one person from a mistake I'm sure we
have all made at some point,..NOT BACKING UP YOUR WORK!
It's a lesson I 've been taught more than once, so I thought it would be good to
promote a little awareness.
Back up your work to a separate drive...NOW please!. If you value your work there is no reason to wait.
Well, there is the advice. Now for the help part.
My hard drive died and I lost every single thing I've worked on since I
installed the drive about three months ago. What's really sad is that I just
got around to reinstalling the software for my DVD burner and planned to back
up everything later that evening. There is just no excuse for waiting.

When I boot with that drive, I get, Error auto-detecting drive 0.
I've tried a new ribbon cable, different power supply connection and a new jumper on the drive. The only options I see in bios is Auto or Off.
I tried booting with SpinRite in hopes that it might see the drive, but it didn't.
The drive doesn't appear to be spinning up properly. I have considered buying another drive like it and changing the logic board. Is there something else I can try?

Looks like you've checked about everything possible. How many gigs did you lose?

Jamie lost like 5 years of work about 2 months ago, both his drives died at the same time.

Yes, I'm sure that did suck.

The drive was 320 gig.

Any reason why the drives are stuffing up? Are they old? Poor quality? I can't say I've ever had a hard drive problem thankfully.

I'm using a WD Caviar 320 right now, I hope it doesn't only last 3 months frown.gif

Did you get it replaced on warranty?

No warranty yet, WD's web site suggested entering the drive parameters into BIOS rather than auto detect, since I can't do that with this system, I'm going to try sticking the drive in one of my old computers later, maybe I'll get lucky.

byder, the sad thing is that I had any number of ways to back up my work,
including two other computers on network and a secondary local drive.
That being said, I'm aware of Max's options for autobak and sequential save as well as configuring paths, however, I don't see a way to save to two separate paths at the same time. How can I do that?

As a side note, I still have the 100Mb Western Digital that came in my first computer. The last time I installed it, about a year ago, it booted with lighting speed. I'm considering making a nice frame for it. smile.gif

Oooi hectic! We work over a network onto a remote machine (which can also be dangerous) It gets backed up regularly and most of the important stuff is in a version system!!!
