Hey All,
Is it just me or have you guys noticed that vray is slightly unstable... not in terms of crashing, but everytime I open scene the reflections change, or disappear, items suddenly recieve lights when they were set not to, etc etc. I'm beginning to waste time re setting up my scene everytime I open it...
Its a tad annoying!!!

EDIT: It actually seems to ignore changes I make to shaders... and then when I open the scene again it applies the changes. It leaves me not knowing if they change has worked or if its just BUGGY... frown.gif

EDIT 2: Also, is there a specific way for Vray to disable recieve light and cast shadows, or can I use the standard 'properties' of the mesh?

sounds totally unacceptable. I've never had problems like that. the unhandled exception crash used to drive me crazy. these days it seems pretty solid. what version are you using?

Hey Tyson,
I'm on Adv 1.5 RC3... it definitely seems to be that I make a change and it doesn't appear untill I restart max or my machine?! WEIRD!! lol

1) Do you know if there is a specific way for Vray to 'disable receive light' and 'cast shadows', or can I use the standard 'properties' of the mesh?
2) Is there a good way to create Incidence?! Fall off isn't working to well for me frown.gif

1) Just use the object properties like you normally would.
2) Is incidence like fresnel reflections? Where the reflection changes depending on the viewing angle? If it is, just tick the fresnel reflections box smile.gif

The errors you're getting aren't something I've ever experienced. I've always found vray to be very stable. Have you googled those symptoms?

Hey,
Thanx I figured out my properties problem smile.gif

Yes, incidence is like fresnel, but not a reflection. Its more just adding a glow or lightening to the edge

Another question?! Are you able to make a section of a UV Mapped image glow... like adding an emissive map?!

do you mean incandescence? The angle of incidence is the angle that a line makes with another line perpendicular to the surface of the object. like when you use place highlight you can pick a normal and it will move the light to the right angle of incidence so as to be visible in the reflection from your viewing angle.

for glow effects you would either need to make a texture for the self illumination slot or use a vray light material. the first option would mean painting a seperate map with black everywhere you don't want to glow and a colour in the glowing part. then check to colour box on your self illumination. you can increase the output of the map to make it glow more and emit light with vray. for the second method you would need to use a blend material and create a mask in photoshop. or just do it with a seperate mesh.

The texture method would be the one I am keen to use, but Vray sadly has no self-illumination slot... thats why I am wondering.

There's a vray light material (basically self illumination) which you could blend with the normal vray material, or you could use a standard material with self illumination and just put a vray map in the reflection and or refraction slot if you need that stuff.

well yeah, the way around it is using a mask. just create a black and white mask in photoshop using your uvw template for reference then mix either a self illuminated standard material or a vray light material with your base material using blend or vray blend material. jeez thats too many materials in one sentence...

I was just about to do an image like that! Yours is probably better though.
