hey guys, i'm sorta new to 3ds max. Been using it for a little while, but i've hit a snag.

I downloaded a mesh of the Enterprise from Star Trek TNG and i had to download the textures separately. i've been getting them on OK, but some have two textures that are obviously for the same material. One seems to be the hull plating and windows, and the other has details like the "NCC-1701-D" on the front of the saucer section. So here's my question:

How do i combine both maps to show them together in a material? they are both opaque, but i think a certain shade of grey on the detail map is supposed to be transparent, as it is present in all the areas that should be showing the details through. I've tried adding them both to the maps in a material, but it only shows the one that'd higher up on the list. i *think* i just have to set a certain colour to be transparent, but i don't know how to do that. If anyone can tell me how i'd be very appreciative.

BTW, I'm using 3DS MAX 7.

Cheers,

James Renault

Are the maps PNG or TGA or some other 32bit image type?

You could do this several ways, UV mapping, multi/sub materials or just assign materials directly to the selected faces.

A couple of screenshots would be great too.

You could try a mask material and use the same bitmaps in both the map and the mask slot.
