Basically I'm having a bit of a problem with a fish that someone has sent me which I'm trying to animate. I want to animate it to swim around a spline. I've followed a similar tutorial in the 3ds max bible for animating a looping aeroplane but there is a difference with the fish object that I am using. With the fish selected, When I go to trajectory, select the 'convert from' button and click on my spline instead of it putting the whole fish neatly on the spline for animation, it splits the fish up into its constituent parts ie fins, tail and gives each bit a seperate animation path.

I don't really have any knowledge of modelling so I'm not sure how to fix this. I've tried to group the objects together but I can't seem to solve the problem. If anyone knows what I need to do, I'd love to hear.

Let me know if I can supply any more info.

Cheers,
Scott

Can we see the fish? hehe
The only thing I can think of right off is using "attach" within editable poly or editable mesh.

If it's an obj file ,when you import the mesh there's an option to import it as a single or multiple objects. I think multiple is default, try changing it to single.

The fish is in a max file format. I can send it if you have an email- not sure how I can show it you otherwise.
I can't seem to get any attach options (possibly because it isn't a spline?). I still don't have any attach options ie a quad menu, even after clicking the convert from button.

In terms of exporting it as an object, I have tried this and by importing as a single object it does stop the fish from being split up into parts when I convert it. The only problem then is that the import export (as obj.) seems to get rid of the textures and since each part has a different texture associated with it, I would need to have seperate parts to the fish in order to drag the different materials to it. Is there some other way of preventing the fish from being divided when I hit the 'convert form' button?

use a dummy object on your path instead then align the fish to it, link it to the dummy using select and link. using a dummy helper or any other non renderable object is probably a better option anyway as you have more control later on if you want to animate the fish a little bit by hand.

That's great, got it working how I need it using a dummy helper. Thanks for your help!
