Hi guys, this looks like a great forum!

Im trying to texture a boat at the moment, i have used box mapping to get a complete 2d view of the bottom of the boat.

I render the unwrap uv and save as a png

I then use this to make a complete texture template in gimp, Rust and colour(bottom of boat you seesmile.gif

I then take this back into max and apply to the bottom of the boat .

However as you may be aware the bottom of the boat is not simply a flat surface so the texture does not wrap correctly.

Is there an easier way to apply my gimp template?

any help appreciated

In this case if you want to be able to paint onto different parts of the ship the best method is to planar map each piece inside the uvw unwrap modifier. I have been planning to make a video of this for a while but I'm going overseas for two weeks tomorrow. so
instead I'll try to describe the process.

1. Apply the unwrap uvw modifier. which allows you to edit the existing uvs in various ways.
2. in the subobject of the modifier select face.
3. select all the polygons on the base of the ship that face down. Basically all the polygons that will map correctly together if a planar projection is applied.
4. hit the quick planar map button in the unwrap modifier. This button will automatically make a planar projection based on the averaged normals of the selection.
5. open the edit window and move the polygons that have just been mapped to ones side.
6. make another selection such as one side of the ship.
7. repeat the planar map procedure. and move the polygons in the edit window to one side.
8 continue to map each section in a logical manner until the whole object has been mapped.
9. in the edit window arrange all the pieces within the blue square 0-1 uv space. selecting them by element (select element checkbox)
10. In the edit window tools menu go to render uvw template and save the file.
11. now you can paint maps in photoshop (or gimp) using these uvs.

I hope thats of some use. good luck with your project.
