Hi all! i am lets say pretty new at 3ds. I need to know how to make my model streched, so that I can draw textures in photoshop? I don't know how to set UVW unwrap tool so that I can export it streched. Can someone please either tell me step-by-step, or give a link to some real good tutorial, since I found some tuts, but they don't explain almost nothing confused.gifTo be specific, It's a head model. I'm makeing a character.

Thanks

Simple answer is to give your model an unwrap uvw modifier, click the edit button, go to tools menu and click render uvw template. Then you can open the file up in photoshop and draw in your textures. That should be enought for a head.

Yeah, but the problem is that when I do this, It looks like that:[IMG][Link to i180.photobucket.com][/IMG]

And I want it to look like that: (only without tongue) [IMG][Link to i180.photobucket.com][/IMG]

I can't draw on that, becouse I see no ears, or anything. If it would come out like that second one, I could draw whatever I want,

I'd be glad if someone could help me.

Well it won't come out like the second one cause that's a texture. What you're after is more like the image below. Can you post a wireframe image of your model?

Well, I know that was a texture, but yeah, I want it to come out like the one you posted. Can you tell me how to do that? I did the thing you said the first time, but it haven't worked for me (you saw what came out). I am thankfull that you have the time and nerves to explain it to me, and help.

What do you mean wireframe image of model? how?

For a wrieframe just take a screenshot of the model in the 3ds max viewport.

Sometimes the topology of the model can affect how effectively it can be unwrapped. BTW, can you post it with the uvw unwrap modifier on so we can have a look at the seams? It should look something like the image below. Except it'll be a head.

Ok, so here are some pics of that head I made, It's a crappy quality, becouse I took a "scrool look > print prev".

There's the one you asked me to put, but from a diferent points of view

And there it is how it looks without TurboSmooth.
(I set turbosmooth to 2)

Oh, and another question: If anyone can tell me how to merge two diferent models into one. For example: I made a head, and hears separate, so how to put ears on that head?

Its File->Merge, then choose the max file that has the ears.

No, I made both ears and head in the same file, but separate objects. Is there any way to merge them into one object?

Thanks!

Use the attach button in your editable poly panel. Then weld the vertices.

Your seams are a bit all over the place, you should aim to get 1 seam at the back of the head and araound the eyes and mouth etc. Try deleting your uvw unwrap modifier and add a uvw mapping modifier and set the mapping to cylindrical with cap on. Set the alignment to the model's x axis (might be different to the world x axis), then reapply your uvw unwrap modifier and see what happens.

Ok, lets say that I get some of it now, the only thing is, I still have the seams on the places they used to be. I get how to edit new seams, but I need to know how to remove the existing ones??

I think that when I remove all the seams and add new ones on the places u said, I could finally stretch the head as I wanted so that I can add texture.

Right when I choose "UVW unwrap", it applyes seams that I don't want to be there, so
HOW DO I DELETE THE SEAMS?

The existing seams should be removed when you delete your initial UVW Unwrap modifier. Can you post an image of your modifier stack? That's the section on the right of the screen that lists all your modifiers.

Yeah, but when I delete UVW unwrap modifier, and UVW map, and when I choose UVW unwrap again the seams are back again as they were. I'll put a picture when I catch some time, if it's not a problem.

I want it to make with no seams at all, so that I can edit my own where ever I want, if you know what I mean.

Thank you both for you patience.

Once you click on Edit in the UVW, you'll get these buttons unhashed. (see image)

Have a play with them.

Ok now. So, here's what I did:

I deleted the UVW unwrap modifier, and i tryed to put UVW map modifier and choose cilinrical, but that does not work, becouse it's a head, so it doen't unwrap from all the corners (like chin, and stuff). So, I tryed to choose spherical, and on my big surprise, it worked!! I acctually get this unwraping/mapping stuff a little more now. The only thing is that when I tryed to draw a test texture, I displaced some stuff a little (like mouth and stuff), but generally, I think I did it. I'll post this model of a head when I finish the textures, and when I model the ears.

So, thanx a lot guys, I think we can consider this Solved wink.gif

I also get the attaching object to object now. (solvedsmile.gif)

Thanks!

Well done. The only problem you might face with the spherical mapping is the pinching at the top of the head. Of course if your character is going to have hair this won't be a problem.
