I've been UVW unwrapping my model, I've followed tutorials and what my teacher taught me, but it WON'T display my texture on my model. It's either completely black or it randomly displays a color on my texture in the WRONG area.

It's driving me nuts!

What could I be doing wrong?

In other words, what are some general screw ups people commonly do?

if you are using unwrap uvw make sure you are on or above it in the modifier stack. If you are below it you will get messed up uvs. Can you apply a checker map and see whats going on with the uvs?

It displays just fine with the checker map, but when I render the unwrap to a texture in normal mode and then put it on the object, it just turns black.

Do I possibly have a bad 3Ds Max install?

So you are applying the uvw template directly to the model? are you saving it with an alpha channel? try opening the template in photoshop invert it and put it on a multiply layer at the top of the layers pallette then paint on a new layer using it as a guide above. hide the top layer and save it out as a psd then load that onto the mesh.

Ok, I've tried to unwrap a box:

Whenever I render it, it's just a black screen. Does this file work for anyone else? If it does, then please, tell me. If it doesn't, tell me what I did wrong.

Ok, I figured out my problem. My material was set to tile itself a lot, so it always looked black and weird.
