i'm making scenes with my vray renderer selected. i've got a recurring problem which is that vray textures rendered in the viewport realtime seems to make max really unstable, causing it to constantly crash. when the 'view textures in viewport' button is selected, often max will crash after some time. an obvious solution would be not to tick this button, but its vital for positioning textures with accuracy. i've had scenes made completely unable to open, as they run into display errors as soon as they are loaded.

does anyone else have simillar problems? or is it just my tower? thankyee

*instability...

perhaps your problem is not caused by vray, maybe you need to update your graphic card drivers.
Or maybe max is just acting wired and crazy as usual, producing some really annoying bugs, in which case a simple reinstall usually does the trick

yeah, definitely could be your hardware, I had a problem with weird crashes once that turned out to be a faulty stick of RAM, you could try removing one stick at a time to see if its that. try updating your video card drivers. Are you running Direct X? maybe try swapping over to openGL and see if it still does it.

Altopais and Tyson has some good points, I'd start there.

Aside from display errors on scenes that won't open, do you get any sort of error dialog when Max crashes? As far as I know I've never had V-Ray cause Max to crash unless I am rendering.
I have had V-Ray cause what I "believe" to be material related crashes upon rendering, no error from Max or V-Ray or anything, Max just closes and doesn't even show the error report dialog.

Some V-Ray materials available for download are just screwy to say the least. One V-Ray mat that I downloaded caused Max to crash as soon as a render bucket hit it.
Another one caused an extremely slow render even though there was nothing complicated about either of the materials. There was just something wrong with them.

Also I've found that sometimes if you apply a V-Ray material directly to selected polygons without using Muti-Sub-Object to assign ID's, intentionally or otherwise, V-Ray does not like it one bit. That's just been my experience.

And did I mention Altopais and Tyson has some good points too. smile.gif

I've only ever had vray crash when the scene is to complex and cant fit in my ram. Try switching to dynamic geometry mode in the system Rollout.

thanks guys i'll take them all into account. i wouldn't have thought it would be a hardware problem, but there's always something about your pc that will surprise you. thanks yah i'll try restarting it.
i know one definite problem is when i set vray materials to display in the viewport (when an opacity map is applied along with other maps) it indefinitely crashes. its just a "An unexpected error occured" BAM kinda thing
i'll reinstall and see how it goes, thanks for the help

My last 2 PC's have done nothing but love me. Even though I abuse them so. I am frequently bouncing off my RAM limit (even before I start rendering).

It is however time for an upgrade. My core 2 2.4 is getting a little slow.
