I don't know how long this took me, I pulled a muscle in my back while painting it ( I have no idea how) and could not walk for about 20 mins. I just dragged my ass back to the computer to finish it.

Im gonna go lie down again now haha.

Edit: I forgot to mention I did not use reference.

looks awesome, but i'm sure you want crits so here goes.

the foreground and the water look great, but i think the background could use more variation to give the impression that there is a lot of random vegetation going on. it seems like there are only a few shades of green used and a few different shpaes. i realise its the background of the image and it should be somewhat vague and i kinda know the painterly style you are going for as I have seen similar paintings before.

but maybe you could vary the brushes used or try different shapes as well as colours to break it up a bit. its hard to explain but hopefully you know what i mean.

and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

Thanks for the crits dude, this forum is starting to turn into a pat on the back thing again. I agree on the hill the vegitation is crap that whole hill is, I should have found some reference, but I wanted to try without. Cheers man

agreed I usually want crits not compliments (though they are nice sometimes). I think if you want ass pats go draw an anime furry and post it on deviant art. woops thats a bit harsh, theres some good work on there
and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

oh come on. everyone wants to be given positive feedback about their work. Thats part of what drives us all to create work. Everything we do is hopefully going to be seen, to entertain someone and a huge part of the satisfaction of creative art is knowing others are enjoying it. That said, I agree that plenty of people, (not so much here) tend to lap up the positive stuff and get offended by the tough love approach. I guess its about wording things so you get some positive feedback and some constructive crit in the same breath.

I find it hard critisising this kind of stuff as I'm pretty rubbish at and sort of drawing or painting so generally unless there's a huge obvious mistake I'm gonna think it looks pretty good. Also for scenery shots like this nature is such a random thing you can't really say "this looks wrong" or "this wouldn't happen in real life".

I do agree there has been a bit more back patting recently though, I'm guilty of it. Sometimes you're just so busy you don't have time to write an in depth post on what could be changed and improved.

I guess people want to say something nice because its very easy to sound offensive with just text. unless you have the time to elaborate and carefully phrase things it can come off as preachy if you thow in too much critique. Looking at this image again here are my crits.

1. The main centre line of the composition divides the frame through the centre which makes the image quite passive.
2. The diagonal line of the reflection leads the eye out of the canvas and theres nothing leading it back in.
3. theres no clear focal point, no object of interest in the frame.
4. The foreground element is ambiguous it could be a rock in the foreground or the river bed leading off in perspective.

Maybe try to incorporate a device to lead the eye back into the canvas ie: a fallen log or something. then that could also help to define your foreground middle and background planes.

I agree crits are in short supply here, and i'm an offender as well. But for the most part I don't criticize what I don't know.
don't know much about composition, and lines and angles of paintings, so the only thing i can really criticize are the aesthetics, and pure artistic value of the piece. and i tend to like most of your speed paint work man cos it just seems so dreamy and ethereal. probably because i have no comparison point, and have not seen enough of stuff like this!
i didn't know that was your final render btw, jamie smile.gif
