Hi everyone, I'm using 3ds max 9 aaaww.gif

I'm having some trouble modelling a car at the moment. I started off doing it by box, then thought it was far too complex and went for spline modelling. It's turned out much crisper and i can't wait to add the surface modifier. However, it didn't turn out too well and I found out that the verts that I thought were fused were in fact near each other, not joined. I have tried to weld them (as I here fuse causes problems) but they just won't join up! Now that I think about it, I have never been able to weld spline vertices... i wonder why this is confused.gif

Please help

Have you attached all of the splines together or did you create them separate. You can not weld spline verts if the splines are all separate. If your not sure what I mean, I can post an example for you when I get home.

Hi, I created alot of them as seperate lines and then attached them all together. Now the entire shape is 1 spline. I have noticed though that there are 2 colours of vertices - white and yellow, and when i try to connect one of each it won't do it, but yellow to yellow and white to white will.

With a further look, the yellow verts appear to be the end of line vertices and they don't connect/ weld with another yellow. Also the whites don't just connect with the whites, this happened luckily with the first couple i selected. Connecting and welding only seems possible with certain vertices. I have used refine and connect a few times so maybe this is the problem.

So are you still having problems?

Yes I cant weld the verts together and until i do i cant use the surface mod

Can you post a screenshot? I can't think why your yellow verts wouldn't be welding. I'm pretty sure you won't be able to weld the white ones together though as you can only have 2 spline segments coming off each vert.

've pulled a few apart so you can see that they aren't just 1

I'm fairly certain any vertice can't have more than 2 segments coming out of it. That's why you can't weld them together, there's too many segments going into the 1 vert.

Ok, that makes sense, but how do i go about using the surface modifier if i can't do this?

I hate to say it, but you won't be able to use the surface modifier with what you've got there. To use the surface modifier you need various cross sections of your model to be linked together and the surfaced. Check out this thread to see it's use:

About halfway down there's a little tute explaining basic use of cross sections and the surface modifier.
