I thought it might be interesting to see what people look for most in a game. For me all of the options I've listed have an influence in one way or another (especially other - can't have a good game without other) but for me the storyline is the most important thing. If a game has a good storyline that hooks you in and keeps you interested all the way through it can make up for graphics that aren't quite there or some annoying gameplay.

Thoughts?

What is the most important feature of a game to you?:

Graphics
Gameplay
Story
Genre
Multiplayer
Other

I voted story but in reality its a combo of story and gameplay - If the story is good but the gameplay is crap then the game will be crap.

Gameplay is the most important to me. Graphics are great so is an interesting storyline but if the control sucks then the game sucks. On the flip side If the graphics arn't great, the story isn't very interesting, and the Gameplay is amazing the game is still amazingly entertaining tongue.gif For the game's I want to make I want to have specific fighting style and combat systems does anybody know if that is controlled soaly in the programing aspect of game design or not?

I voted gameplay, I can ignore bad graphics to a point but bad gameplay ruins the experience. However I think all of the above have a role to play. Really what makes or breaks a game for me is weather or not it is immersive.

Gameplay is absolutely the most important. If you had that list without Gameplay as an option I think the decision would be less black and white. Personally I go for games that have good stories over action titles. Rpgs or action rpgs are pretty much the only games that can really get me to give up my life. Stuff like final fantasy, oblivion, fallout 3, mass effect etc.. but I'm always going to be critical of the story unless its totally awesome. As Jamie would agree fallout 3 is a prime example of a game that did so much right but fizzled out when it came to a decent ending. endings are the hardest part when it comes to a script I guess.

Yeh, I think story and gameplay are going to be the most important factor for most people. I guess there are people out there that are totally hooked on one genre and don't give a crap about story or gameplay as longs as it ticks all the boxes for that particular genre. I think another reason I've gone for story over gameplay is that when I think back to those old Lucasarts adventure games, they didn't really have much gameplay (point mouse here and click) yet I still count them as some of my favourite games. I can't think of many games that I've really enjoyed that have had awesome gameplay but a crap story. Team Fortress 2 would be one in that catagory though.

It is gameplay for me. I still go back to my old 8 bit games and have as much, if not more, fun playing them. And I dont think thats just the nostalgia factor. 8 bit rules!
