Hi folks,

I have been told about a programme called Z Brush, for creating 3D models and characters. Is it possible to sculpt my characters in Z Brush and import them into 3DS Max 9??

Please forgive my ignorance, I am new to 3DS Max.

I think most model in max, detail in zbrush, then export back to max. So you should be right.

You can model from scratch in z-brush using z-spheres. You rough it out using sort off joined spheres which are turned into a quad mesh afterwards, but often the topology is very messy using z-spheres and you have to re-topologise the model before you can use it for animation. (meaning you re structure the way the edges flow around the model for better deformations) the best work flow is to model a nice clean low res quad mesh in max then export as an .obj, sculpt it and subdivide for details in z-brush, then you export the altered low res mesh and displacement maps for the details from z-brush, you can paint colour and bump maps interactively in z-brush too. Its a great work flow but there are several stumbling blocks that can prove to be very tricky until you know the full procedure.

There's a similar program called mudbox which maybe easier to get into than Zbrush. For some reason I always ended up back with Zbrush though...

Yeah Z-brush is pretty abstract, theres so many cool tools but they work in a way you wouldnt think of. Its really worth watching the Gnomon meats mier z-brush dvds, he explains how to use practically all the weird and wonderfull tools in z-brush.
I tried mudbox a tiny bit but had problems exporting displacement maps and kind of gave up.
