It's faked caustics. Just a spotlight pointing up from underneath with a noise projector map. It was a lot cheaper than raytracing it. The sky is just a plain old bitmap.

there seems to be a lot of depth to the sky ... i guess it's just the angle. I found this really cool caustics generator on the net that makes animated bit maps. Saves on raytracing

Comment - This ship was modelled and textured entirely in 3ds Max. I spent a fair amount of time adding minor details such as ropes, chains, pulleys, nuts and bolts etc, so consequently the polygon count is quite high. This image was rendered with V-ray in separate layers and composited in Fusion.
