"Standard screen desktop part of a series I did."
You mean a desktop wallpaper? Way too much white, for me. I'm a nerd that works in dark rooms. I would be blinded every time I went to the desktop.
"Should I post the wide screen variant too?"
Sure?
It would be better to have a transparent background, like a png, so the user chooses the background color and doesn't worry about resolution (Some OSs don't support this). The other way to go would be with a black background so the user's native background color can be matched, hiding the fact that the picture isn't the exact size.
I don't know about Windows 7 but Ubuntu has great tools for desktop backgrounds. I have a Star Trek image that doesn't fit, but, for the parts of the desktop that are exposed, you can see my custom gradient that the OS provides tools to control. My point is, dimensions don't matter too much. The user can get any image on and it can look good, normally by just using the basic wallpaper options.
Also, if you decide to darken it up, can you at least play a little with the light? You had no fun toying with the lighting on this. Heck, add a fire light source! Or, drown the b*!ch and have light coming from over the surface of the water. Or, just add an octopus.

Anyway, good luck
